The NSO regularly hosts “instrument petting zoos” at local festivals, celebrations of municipal Culture Days, and as part of local March Break programming. Partnering with Long & McQuade St. Catharines and volunteers from the Niagara Youth Orchestra, NSO staff and musicians offer fun instrument demonstrations and most importantly, offer members of the public a “hands-on” opportunity to try out orchestral instruments. With instrumental music programs becoming increasingly rare in elementary schools, the Instrument Petting Zoo may be a student’s – or adult’s – first opportunity to hold and explore any type of instrument up close.
