A Message to Our Patrons Regarding COVID-19 and the Niagara Symphony Orchestra

Friday, March 13, 2020

We are disappointed to share with you that we have made the difficult decision to cancel the performance of Masterworks 5: Undaunted scheduled for March 15, 2020  in response to COVID-19.

The Niagara Symphony Orchestra is committed to the health, safety and well-being of our audience, musicians and staff and while we recognize that the risk remains low in Canada, we felt that this decision was important to support our community in protecting the citizens of Niagara. It also aligns with the direction given by Ontario’s Chief Medical Officer of Health to limit gatherings of over 250 people. Effective at 4:30 p.m. March 13, 2020 the following City facilities will be closed to the public until April 5, 2020:

  • FirstOntario Performing Arts Centre
  • All Older Adult Centres including Dunlop Drive, West St. Catharines, and Port Dalhousie
  • All recreation centres including Russell Avenue Community Centre and Port Weller Community Centre
  • City arenas: Seymour-Hannah Sports and Entertainment Centre, Garden City Complex and Bill Burgoyne Arena
  • All branches of the St. Catharines Public Library
  • The St. Catharines Kiwanis Aquatics Centre
  • The St. Catharines Museum and Welland Canals Centre
  • Sports fields including Kiwanis Field
  • Market Square and the St. Catharines Farmers Market
  • The Meridian Centre

Supporting Artists during COVID-19:

For the next weeks and months, thousands of small and large concerts,  tours, theatre events, readings and dance performances across the country have been cancelled. While this is very disappointing for audiences, these actions can be financially devastating for independent musicians, artists, and technicians who rely on concert contracts for employment.

The financial impact of this concert cancellation will be felt by the organization and all the professional musicians who depend on performances as their main source of income. We strongly encourage that you consider a ticket turn-back donation of your Masterworks 5 tickets - you will receive a charitable tax receipt for the value of your tickets, and the NSO will be able to continue to support our musicians during this uncertain time.

The following options are available for patrons who have tickets for Masterworks 5: Undaunted

  • Exchange your tickets to an upcoming performance in the 2019/20 season. Please contact  the FirstOntario Performing Arts Centre Box Office online or by phone at 905-688-0722 to exchange your tickets. Due to high call and email volume there may be a delay before your request is processed.
  • Donate your tickets for a charitable tax receipt. Your support during this challenging time is more important than ever. The consequences of the COVID-19 crisis on the financial health of charitable arts organizations like the NSO are unknown. We hope we can count on your generosity. Please contact  the FirstOntario Performing Arts Centre Box Office online or by phone at 905-688-0722 to make a ticket turn-back donation. Due to high call and email volume there may be a delay before your request is processed.

At this time, all remaining concerts in the 19-20 season will proceed as scheduled.  Any additional changes to the concert schedule will be communicated through the appropriate channels.

We encourage our patrons to follow the government recommended personal measures to prevent the spread of respiratory illnesses, including:

  • Regular handwashing for 20 seconds with soap and water
  • Avoiding touching your eyes, nose and mouth
  • Staying home when you are sick
