NSO unveils the 2018-2019 Concert Season

Apr 14, 2018

Earlier this evening, at a special event for subscribers, the Niagara Symphony Orchestra's Music Director Bradley Thachuk announced the 2018-2019 concert programming.  An alluring mix of classics, popular favourites, family concerts and notable guest artists make this an energetic start to the NSO's 8th decade.  The Masterworks, POPS! and Classical Family series offer huge variety, and this year the Masterworks series includes the recently-established N. Walker Chamber Orchestra series.  Every concert this season is exceptional, a unique, thrillingly-live experience not to be missed.

NSO Music Director Bradley Thachuk introduced the season this way:  “I’m very proud to present to you the 18-19 NSO concert season.  Our exciting Masterworks series features works that I have been waiting to share with you, from Debussy’s La Mer to our season closing Opera Extravaganza.  Our POPS! series features programs you have been asking for, and sees us welcome back old friends.  Looking forward to seeing you all next season!"

The opening Masterworks concert sets the tone for the season; we welcome internationally renowned piano duo Anagnoson and Kinton and begin a year-long salute to composer Kevin Lau.  The aptly-named Masterworks series also includes great orchestral classics by Liszt, Beethoven, Tchaikovsky and Haydn; operatic highlights by Puccini, Donizetti and Verdi; and brilliant guest artists.  The N. Walker Chamber Orchestra series (part of Masterworks) launches with an all-Mozart programme next January and features NSO musicians as soloists.

POPS! concerts next year will see the welcome return of many old friends and showcase lively, engaging music:  a salute to Frank Sinatra, the annual tradition of the NSO Holiday festivities, a tribute to the great women of rock, and - what's not to love? - a John Williams extravaganza!

Classical Family concerts show just how much fun you can have at a symphony!  Spooktacular returns, with eerie music just in time for Hallowe'en; our annual holiday treat features perennial favourites The Snowman and Peter and the Wolf; and Game On! is a sports themed concert with The Hockey Sweater and Casey at the Bat - for fans of all ages!

As we launch the 2018-19 season, and with it the Niagara Symphony Orchestra's 8th decade, we invite you to join us for a year of excellence, unmatched excitement and pure musical energy!

A hallmark of our 71st season is the dazzling array of outstanding guest artists appearing onstage with the NSO, reflecting a continuing commitment to our nation's finest performers.  Returning favourites include NSO Principal Guest Conductor Aisslinn Nosky; pianist Anastasia Rizikov; vocalists Matt Dusk and Joey DeBenedetto; Chorus Niagara; and Toronto Symphony Orchestra Concertmaster Jonathan Crow.

Joining the NSO for the first time are renowned Canadian piano duo Anagnoson and Kinton, National Arts Centre Orchestra Principal Cellist Rachel Mercer, Broadway star Christine Cornish Smith, and the dynamic young conductor Mélanie Léonard.

Maestro Thachuk is especially proud to feature two members of the orchestra as soloists this season, part of the N. Walker Chamber Orchestra Series:  Principal Flute Doug Miller and Principal Trumpet Ira Zingraff.
