Masterworks 7: Arise!

May 02, 2017

Marvellous end to a glorious season!

Presenting Mahler's Resurrection at Masterworks 7

The Niagara Symphony Orchestra's 2016-17 season comes to a resounding conclusion with Mahler's grand and emphatic work, Symphony No. 2, the Resurrection.  Combining the enormous musical forces of a full symphony, soloists and chorus under the baton of NSO Music Director Bradley Thachuk, this concert is presented for one astonishing performance only. Join us Sunday May 21, at 2:30 p.m. in Partridge Hall, FirstOntario Performing Arts Centre.

According to reviews of the first performance, in this deeply spiritual work "a human being struggles with the concept of immortality by way of suffering, joy and passion on earth".  To explore such immense and compelling themes, we gather our largest orchestra this season, plus soloists Allyson McHardy and Lida Szkwarek and Chorus Niagara.

Also on this concert, the NSO  proudly presents the world premiere of a fanfare by Kevin Lau:  For Home, Sesquie for Canada's 150th.  The Niagara Symphony Orchestra is honoured to be part of the Toronto Symphony Orchestra's Canada Mosaic, a pan-Canadian Signature Initiative of Canada 150.

This majestic concert concludes the Niagara Symphony Orchestra's outstanding 2016-17 season and sets the stage for our 70th anniversary next year.  Join us for another piece of history in the making!

HONOURED GUEST AT MASTERWORKS 7:  Mahler's Symphony No. 2 was last performed by the St. Catharines Symphony 41 years ago, conducted by its fifth Music Director Leonard Atherton.  All of us at the Niagara Symphony Orchestra are thrilled to welcome Mr. Atherton as our special guest at Masterworks 7. Eagerly awaiting Mr. Atherton's arrival are 10 members of the orchestra and chorus who performed in that 1976 concert, and an NSO patron who was a featured soloist!
